very rough idle when engine's cold

I've an 81 that idles rough with a cold engine. Once it warms (3-5 mins?)it seems to be fine. Even when the choke is set, it idles so roughly it will stall if I don't give it some gas. During this warm up period (again maybe 5 mins usually)a plume of white exhaust billows from the mufflers. Increasing the idle really didn't help. The white exhaust also dissipates when the engine warms.
