Engine ticking noises
by: Mike

I have been working on Corvettes for at least 35 years. Ticking sounds from the engine can be many things such as loose lifters, arching plug wires, loose belts, loose pulleys, timing chain slack, oil-fuel pumps and etc. The one that had me puzzled lately was a bad harmonic balancer. It started sounding like an arching plug wire but got louder. The harmonic balancer did not wabble and was not off from alighnment. To check the harmonic balancer take off all the belts connected to the crank pulley one at a time. Run engine each time. When the bad sound goes away, look at those components connected to the crank pulley. If those are good, it could be your harmonic balancer. In my case when I retightened the power steering belt, the ticking noise was back. Check and eliminate the easiest things first.

ticking

It's probably a valve lifter gone bad . It's no easy
fix . But if you don't know for sure go to someone
who works on cars and ask them. They might be able to tell you. Good luck.
