th400 transmission clunks

th400 transmission shifts or clunks hard when going from park into reverse and from neutral to drive. The idle is around 800 rpm so not too high there. Also I have replaced all u-joints in the car. I guess next is to rebuild the tranny, the engine was recently rebuilt.
I purchased a rubber cushion that goes in the rear somewhere but haven't installed it yet. Also have a gas leak at tank so have to take the tank out and replace rubber hoses. thanks for any help on the clunking.
