Tachometer cable replacement

I have replaced the tachometer drive gear and added a 90 degree adapter. The problem is when I go to attach the cable to the gear it doesn't work. The hole bored in the gear shaft is round and the cable is square. Do I have the wrong parts or is there something else I should do?
