Starter Problem?

I have a 95 Vette. When you turn the key, all you get is a loud noise, kind of like the starter trying to engage, but stops abruptly. Every once in a while the starter will turn, but the car doesn't turn over. I'm getting fuel, I can smell it, but the engine cranks but doesn't turn over. Please help. (One time smelled a lot of burnt smoke coming from the passenger side of the engine below the exhaust manifold. Once it dissipated, haven't smelled it again since trying to crank the car.)
