replacing release button for c5 soft top

I have a '99 C5 soft top and the button that unlatches the hood broke. I've picked up a new button, but can't figure out how to get the old one out. I can't figure out a way to access the button from the top, which seems like the easiest way to remove the old button. If anyone has any advice oor experience with this, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!
