Rattling Convertible Stowage Lid

The stowage lid on my 1991 convertible is rattling. I tried adjusting the bolt that removes the play on the striker and latch assembly but this approach makes the lid not flush with the body. What is the proper way to remove the play on the latch/striker? Does the latch have to be replaced?
