Push clutch in, put in reverse to start and put in reverse to turn 73 vette off

I am buying a 73 vette and owner tells me to start car, push clutch in, put in reverse and turn key to start. then to turn car off put car in reverse with clutch in and turn key off. Why is that, is this true or a problem?
let me know.. ASAP
