My interior door handle retaining screw keeps breaking off

One day the handle was on the floor at my feet. I could not find the screw so I ordered a pair. replaced the handle and after a day it broke off with part of the screw still in the door mechanism. Drilled it out, tapped and replaced with new screw, same thing happened. Please Help
