My 1971 Corvette 350/270 H.P automatic transmission lunges when put into gear.

My corvette lunges forward or backward right when it is put into forward or reverse gear. If I didn't have descent brakes the car would go right through the garage. Otherwise the car rides smoothly while driving (stopping and starting while in gear). It's just when I put the transmission into gear. I wasn't sure if the tranny needs a complete overhaul, or just a torch converter issue. I wanted to get some advice from someone who possible has had some experience with this before I go to a mechanic. I'm completely in the dark when it comes to transmission, and would greatly appreciate any information before seeking professional help. Thank you!

RUN AWAY CORVETTE
by: Jim

Have the same corvette and the same problem. Has happened 3 times accelerates on its own, spins the tires like a burn out. Have you figured out the problem, and what the fix is? I have changed the carb. and linkage cable so far. It has happened twice with the first carb and linkage and one with the rebuilt carb, and new linkage. Need to check to see if the carpet is holding the pedal up. My mech. friends do not believe a bad torque converter would cause the car to accelerate at a dead stop on its own. HELP!

Probably old advice now but I suspect you need a torque converter with a higher stall.
