mixed up body panels

I recently found and purchased a 1965 Corvette roadster that was in a garage and had not moved since 1983. The vin# is 194675s1232xx. It has rear disc brakes, the vin tag rivited under the right dash, a 65 hood but not the original engine. The really weird part of this car is that it has the side front fenders with a the 64 style horizontal inserts and not the 65 style open vertical openings. The fenders have never been split from the original bonding strips and the fire wall has the indents for the horizontal inserts. I can not see any evidence that the body has ever been off the frame and the car is showing 66kmi. Does any one know if there were ever cars built like this one or do I have some old mixed up builder? I found out that this Corvette had been striped and repainted in the late 70s but as I said I can not find any evidence that the body has ever been off the frame or that the gas tank has ever been removed. I am planning to replace the side fender sections with the 65 style but don't want to ruin this car if it was actually built this way.. Help

Thanks, Karl
