Intermittent problem with a 91 Corvette

The engine will suddenly quit while cruising down the freeway. It will restart and go for a few more miles before doing it again. Sometimes after restarting the tachometer will not be working and the engine runs poorly then all of a sudden the tachometer will start working again and the engine smooths out and runs good. What could be going on here?
