Headlights flipped up with no one around

Both headlights flipped up with no one around---both motors were extremely hot--left lamp is now down and sounds like there is a ratchet when we lift that one up manually and the right is up and does not respond to turning the headlights on with the headlight switch---not sure if the motors just burn out or is there a way to check what made them pop up ----is there a program to check out ? Baffled and no help from the local GM dealer---
