exhaust odor

The odor from the exhaust is almost too much to handle. my wife complains it gets in her hair. there are flowmaster exhaust on the vehicle. I don't know when they were put on, or how old they are. is it possible the exhaust need to be replaced, or is this old car smell? I do know the motor is about 17 years old. I was told when I bought the car it's a 330
horse crate motor. it's a 1974 corvette.
