Exceedingly dim dash lights

I have a 1976 Corvette and when driving at night, I have almost no dash lighting. It is impossible to be driving and know what speed you are going! Has anyone tried replacing original bulbs with LED's? If so, are there issues? Do the lights come in colors and where can I buy them?
