dish information mpg/instant mpg erratic

All of dash operating as normal except
1. when I move switch from English to metric, sometimes erratic values on dash
2.mpg and instant data erratic. Appears, say instant mpg, will show 8, then change to 16 and then to 32 like doubles.

I do not want to send dash out for repair if that is not where data problem is.

Do not know where data is coming from to determine origin of problem.
Car I bought new is 1987 with 34,000 miles.
