cutting off/

Hello,
I have a 1996 collectors edition corvett. everything was running great. no problems and had even been checked out by a mechanic aprx 1 month ago. one morning when i was leaving home the car started sounding horrible like it wanted to cut off. i noticed that the gas was displaying the reserve bar. once i got to the end of my street it cut off. i went and got gas, stared it up and i was able to make it back home. went and put more gas in it but now it still sounds terrible when it is running but it cuts off.. what could this be?
