Car won't go into gear.

The battery in my car has been dead for about a year. I jump started my car about 3 months ago and drove my car for a few miles then put it in park then it wouldn't go back in gear. I put a new battery in my car and pulled it out of the garage and put it in park ,, and it wouldn't go back into drive. What is going on with my car ?
