can my c4 corvette shut itself down due to low coolant?

I let my 1996 Corvette run for about 20 minutes in the driveway since its been so cold, and when I when i went out to check on it the motor was off and there was coolant all over the ground. Would the car shut itself down due to low coolant? The engine turned over but had difficulty idling. Thank you
