Can I use narrower wheels on my 17 GS Corvette?

I am 68 years old I don't drive aggressively, or race my car, I just tour around with it. The Michlin tires on it ware out to fast and they are expensive. Can I buy some narrower wheels with the correct set back and put some narrower touring tires on it and drive it that way?
