Brown oil in rear end ????

Have some play in drive train. Checked the shafts and all tight, wheels seam to be the same . In and out play within specks. While doing this I checked the oil level in the rear end and it was a mid brown color. I have seen water contaminated oil before and it does not look like that. The car sat for 30 years and I could not tell you if it had ever been changed.
