Battery in my 04 vet will not hold a charge

I installed a rear view camera in my car and shortly thereafter the battery lost power then all power was gone. I used an old trickle charger to build up battery power and noticed a
switching of the charger indicator from full to no charge accompanied by a noise from the engine compartment. I bought new charging unit...more sophisticated. This charges my battery enough to start the car but just once. After I turn the car off it is powerless. I un-did the wire connection that I spliced into the back up lights but no change in starting problem.
