Backfiring - Blue smoke

When I started my 1974 vet with 4/s will run a little rough but will not stall. Then it began to backfire and during each gear change as well as stopping. Performance will vary and at times the engine would stall when given full gas. After you let up the backfiring will continue 3 or 4 times. When I started the car a lot of blue smoke comes out of my side exhaust pipe-
What is the cause?
