2007 coupe trunk lid strut replacement

I need to replace the the trunk lid struts because they will not hold the trunk lid up. I ordered two but when they arrived they do not have clips for defroster connection. Can I remove the clips from the bad struts and install on the new struts since the connectors on the new ones are removable? If this is done will the defroster still work as I am not sure of the composition of both struts?
