1982 corvette when the engine light comes on it will die.

I have a 1982 corvette. When I'm driving for a while and stopped in traffic, the car is idle and the engine light will come on. It stays on for a while, then the car will die and won't turn the engine over. It needs to cool down about 30 minutes then it will crank and the light will come back on.
