1969 Radio Light

The radio in my '69 works perfectly but the light does not come on. Disassembled the console to get at the bulb and original and new replacement bulb are perfect but won't light. Can't create a spark by grounding terminal so must be an internal wiring problem. Hate to pull radio out and send it away for just a light bulb. Any ideas?
